How do we provide support for "deep learner"?
The working definition of deep support is this:
‘Deep support demands that schools and teachers should collaborate with other institutions, agencies and people to secure deep learning for students’. Hence I believe that it is highly essential for the schools and students to intermix and thus learn from each and other therfore enable them to learn from different aspect and point of views of other people.
Also, I believe that schools need to focus on learning, rather than teaching, and beyond that to deep learning. This is because the current method of teaching is not quite rationale. The reason is because when we are learning, we tend to do it base on an examination technique that I guess is the ultimate wrongdoing and the wrong purpose. This is so because we are learning all because of examination and nothing else. I think that what the educational system is trying to do is simply forcing us to memorise the subjects that we are learning now and apply it to the examination. This I believe do not warrent any credits to the student because what he can get out from so many years of education is only information and knowledge.
I think that what the students need most is how they can apply to the current situation they are situated in. This I think can be done only through the "Deep learning". there are three main conditions for deep learning: learning conversations, meta-cognitive control and growing learner autonomy. Deep support conversations is needed to be learning conversations, involving students as active participants in shaping the support for their learning. Hence the students will know how to react when they are in a conversation. Besides that, students need the ability to think about their own thinking, they are in a better position to engage in conversations about their needs and the type of support they require when they are face with tough question.
Through the deep learning gateways of student voice, assessment for learning and learning to learn, combined with the deep support gateways of mentoring and coaching, and advice and guidance, schools are developing peer tutoring and peer mentoring as a means of students supporting, thus able to provide more students for the deep learning rather than the usual touch and go learning. I think that it is good that people now are aware of this situation and are finding ways to enforce on this vital issues.

What do you propose we do to inculcate a teaching environment in TPJC that allows for more learner autonomy? How about increasing student's ability to think about their own thinking? How can we achieve more of that?

Hi Ryan,
This is Ms Quek here, the one who asked all of you to attend this conference. I'm so impressed by your comments on deep learning. What do you think students must do to contribute to this deep learning?
